Mastering Learning Competencies in Media Design
This section highlights the competencies I’ve gained throughout the Media Design MFA degree program. Each competency includes a clear definition, how it was acquired, and its relevance to my professional growth, paired with visual examples demonstrating practical application.
1. Personal Mastery
Definition: Personal Mastery encompasses self-discipline, self-awareness, and a commitment to continuous growth through meaningful goals. I developed this competency through regular self-reflection, setting achievable goals, and managing
inner challenges, such as balancing personal life with coursework deadlines.
Acquisition: During my first course, I quickly realized that my APA writing skills needed improvement. At the same time, I was starting a new full-time job and dealing with an ongoing family crisis that had persisted for over a year. These circumstances required me to confront personal challenges and prepare for expected stressful times especially when giving my best effort or meeting deadlines might eventually prove difficult. Mastering my time involved effectively balancing research, work execution, and producing polished results—an especially demanding task in a program structured around month-long classes with weekly deadlines throughout the year. Experience has pushed me to refine my time management and organizational skills, strengthening my ability to adapt and thrive under pressure.
Relevance: Personal Mastery provides the mental discipline necessary to overcome challenges while learning how to excel in a competitive field and deal with these issues and concerns even when the powers that be are unaware of emergencies and crises.
2. Strategic Planning
Definition: Strategic Planning involves creating structured steps and setting clear goals to achieve specific outcomes. I acquired this skill through project-based coursework, such as the “Multi-Platform Delivery” course with Andrea Kratz in Month 9. In this course, we managed projects using an organizational strategy requiring us to assess and plan
weekly work. This process allowed us to redefine goals as we progressed, ensuring flexibility and alignment with the project’s evolving needs.
Acquisition: For example, I applied strategic planning techniques to outline objectives and create milestone-driven action plans that guided the execution of each project phase. This structured approach helped me manage tasks effectively, adapt to changes, and deliver high-quality outcomes.
Relevance: Effective planning ensures organized execution by aligning my work with
immediate and long-term goals. It provides a clear roadmap for prioritizing tasks, managing resources efficiently, and maintaining focus on key outcomes. This structured approach enhances productivity and supports adaptability when addressing unexpected challenges or shifting priorities.
3. Skill Enhancement
Definition: Skill Enhancement is the continuous improvement of technical and creative abilities. During the “Defining Client Needs” course in Month 2 with Professor Ryan McClung, I focused on mastering Adobe After Effects and Illustrator technical skills. Techniques such as masking text, animating hand lettering, and vector graphic integration were emphasized throughout the course. While some of these methods were familiar, the class provided an excellent opportunity to catch up on areas where my expertise needed refinement, particularly in achieving precision with masking and animation workflows.
Acquisition: To enhance my proficiency, I supplemented class materials with external YouTube lessons, offering valuable demonstrations and practical insights into After Effects and Illustrator techniques. This dual approach allowed me to refine my technical skills, combining motion graphics in After Effects with detailed vector illustrations in Illustrator to create cohesive and polished designs.
Relevance: This experience underscored the importance of continuous learning and mastering technical skills to meet professional demands. Staying proficient with tools like Adobe After Effects and Illustrator ensures I remain versatile and capable of addressing diverse client needs.
4. Networking
Definition: Networking involves building and maintaining professional connections to foster collaboration and opportunities. I developed this competency by engaging in discussions and events, including multiple planned group sessions using Zoom, text messages, email, and the school’s collaborative platform. These interactions allowed us to manage projects effectively, share ideas, and establish connections that could lead to long-term professional relationships.s.
Acquisition: Through this process, I gained valuable insights into collaborative workflows, project management, and effective communication within a team setting. These experiences enhanced my ability to work collaboratively and broadened my understanding of professional networking practices.
Relevance: Networking opens pathways for career growth, partnerships, and industry insights by fostering connections that can lead to new opportunities, collaborative ventures, and valuable knowledge exchanges. I honed this skill during the ideation and development of the “Puss Zen Bamboots” logo, where I employed a structured approach to coordinate resources, meet deadlines, and integrate creative inputs. Utilizing Adobe Illustrator for digital sketches, AI tools to explore initial concepts, and Google searches for market insights, I streamlined the process. Free Adobe Stock imagery, videos, and vector graphics also inspired me to shape my ideas and refine the brand’s visual identity.
Acquisition: This experience highlighted my ability to align creative objectives with practical timelines while maintaining quality standards. By organizing research, leveraging professional tools, and methodically iterating on design concepts, I successfully developed a logo that encapsulates the brand’s unique identity and vision. Setting clear milestones and tracking progress systematically ensured the project’s timely completion and exceeded expectations in delivering a compelling design.
Relevance: Mastery of this competency equips me to manage complex projects efficiently while focusing on innovative, client-centered outcomes. A visual representation, such as a project timeline or annotated sketches from the “Puss Zen Bamboots” logo ideation process, would demonstrate my proficiency. 6. Quality Assurance
Definition: Quality Assurance involves maintaining high standards in design with attention to detail. I honed this competency through consistent peer feedback and iterative revisions during classes like Bartley Argo’s “Design Research” and typesetting and graphic design course. These sessions provided opportunities to refine my work, particularly during the “Critique and Refine” design challenge in Week 4. Feedback highlighted specific areas for improvement, such as trim adjustments and typography alignment, which I addressed by revising layouts and ensuring adherence to professional standards.
Acquisition: I learned to uphold quality standards in my work through peer feedback and iterative revisions. For example, a classmate, Emelia Knarr, provided an evaluation during the typesetting and graphic design project that emphasized the importance of accurate trimming and consistent typography. By incorporating her suggestions, I improved the precision of my designs and elevated the overall presentation quality. These revisions demonstrated my ability to critically evaluate and enhance my work, ensuring it met both assignment criteria and professional expectations.

This skill complements Quality Assurance by ensuring that design work meets high standards and evolves through consistent, constructive feedback. I developed this competency throughout the year by engaging in numerous design challenges and critique sessions across various courses. Feedback from peers and instructors provided actionable insights, guiding iterative revisions and enabling me to continually refine techniques and elevate my designs.
Acquisition: For instance, during year-round critique sessions such as the “Critique and Refine” design challenges and end-of-year evaluations, feedback highlighted areas for improvement in both design execution and course writing. By applying suggestions, I consistently improved the quality and professionalism of my work, ensuring it met or exceeded expectations.

I honed this skill during Multi-Platform Delivery - Online with Andrea Kratz, where weekly planning sheets were central in organizing tasks and deadlines. The course required managing multiple design projects simultaneously, each with tight weekly deadlines. By leveraging these planning sheets, I practiced time-blocking and task-prioritization techniques to ensure timely completion of all my work. Even the Link from Zelda, the hero of time, had to manage his time properly.
Acquisition: For instance, during the class, I utilized structured weekly plans to allocate time for brainstorming, design development, and revisions, ensuring that each project met quality standards and submission deadlines. These methods not only maximize productivity but also maintain a high level of focus across overlapping responsibilities.
Relevance: Strong time management skills are essential for meeting project deadlines without compromising quality, especially in creative and fast-paced industries where balancing multiple tasks and priorities is critical. Exposure to global design perspectives and collaboration with peers throughout the program enabled me to blend varied aesthetics into my projects. Working closely with my classmates, I discovered their design strengths, weaknesses, styles, preferences, and cultural influences, which enriched my creative approach.
Acquisition: For example, in collaborative projects, I integrated design elements inspired by various American holidays, from Kwanzaa to Halloween and Earth Day. I explored how cultural and environmental values shape design by incorporating themes, symbols, and aesthetics unique to these celebrations. These projects reflected the shared influences and ideas exchanged during group sessions, enhancing my work and fostering a deeper understanding of how cultural diversity and seasonal significance contribute to creative expression.

Acquisition: For example, in my thesis project, Puss Zen Bamboots, I crafted a cohesive brand identity and multimedia strategy emphasizing sustainability and cultural resonance. This project allowed me to explore the entrepreneurial aspects of design, including developing a unique brand concept and effectively communicating it through various media channels.
Relevance: This mindset equips me to approach creative challenges strategically and innovatively, ensuring my work stands out in a competitive market. Through projects like “Puss Zen Bamboots” and the “Every Dog’s Day” festival, I learned the importance of using my creative skills for social impact. For instance, in Effective Copywriting with Elena Maria Rogalle, I developed promotional materials and crafted messaging for the fictitious non-profit organization Lucky Dog Rescue Orlando.
Acquisition: This included applying the non-profit’s voice across various media platforms and creating copy that effectively communicated the festival’s mission to support animal welfare. The final result directly influenced the principles in my thesis.
Relevance: This experience helped me understand how to align branding and messaging with a charitable cause, ensuring the organization’s values were reflected in all materials. Philanthropy aligns with my values, offering opportunities to use my talents for meaningful causes.
12. Technological Proficiency

My expertise expanded into audio and video production with Logic Pro and workflow optimization with Adobe Media Encoder. These tools allowed me to efficiently handle file formats, optimize video quality, and seamlessly integrate sound and visuals. Practical projects, such as producing multimedia content with motion graphics and sound design, helped me refine these skills and stay updated with evolving technology.
Relevance: In today’s competitive creative industry, Technological Proficiency ensures that work remains innovative and meets professional standards. Staying adept at cutting-edge tools like Adobe Premiere and After Effects enables me to create polished multimedia projects incorporating advanced motion graphics and sound design. Studying Zen art and its connection to mindfulness informed my creative process, particularly in the “Puss Zen Bamboots” project. This project required integrating sustainable design principles into graphic work, considering the impact of design choices on the environment and future generations. These practices allowed me to approach design with awareness and purpose, enhancing both the creative process and the final product.

For example, during a critical stage of a group project, a technical issue arose that threatened to delay the timeline. By quickly reaching out to all stakeholders—peers, instructors, and other collaborators—I provided clear updates and proposed solutions and ensured everyone was aligned on the revised plan. This effective communication mitigated the crisis and kept the project on track.
Acquisition: Additionally, flexibility in scheduling and allowing for post-meeting reviews played a crucial role in our group meetings. By being adaptable and open to rescheduling when necessary, I ensured that everyone had the opportunity to contribute effectively, even when unforeseen circumstances arose. This approach fostered collaboration and improved the overall quality of our work.
Relevance: Strong communication and flexibility are essential for building trust, addressing feedback, and ensuring the final deliverable meets expectations.
16. Brand Development
Definition: Brand Development focuses on creating and maintaining a cohesive brand identity that resonates with audiences. I honed this skill in Colleen Cleveland’s Measuring Design Effectiveness class, where I developed a comprehensive brand playbook. This project involved creating a recognizable and consistent brand identity using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign tools. By applying branding principles, I ensured the brand’s visuals, messaging, and tone aligned seamlessly with its target audience. One of the main sources of my inspiration for the Puss Zen Bamboots project came from my favorite game and was my beloved Cat's name (RIP), "The Legend of Zelda," an amazing story in a Nintendo video game series since 1986, and an amazing multimedia journey in the gaming realm.
Acquisition: The process included designing a logo, defining color schemes, selecting typography, and crafting guidelines for maintaining the brand’s identity across various media. These elements came together in a branding package communicating the brand’s values and mission.
Relevance: This competency enables me to help clients establish strong, memorable brands that connect with their audiences by crafting designs that are not only visually compelling but also strategically aligned with their goals. Through a deep understanding of design principles, market trends, and storytelling techniques, I ensure that each brand resonates emotionally and leaves a lasting impact. My ability to integrate creativity with practical solutions allows clients to build authentic connections with their audiences while maintaining consistency and professionalism across all touch points.
17. Multimedia Design
Definition: Multimedia Design integrates various design elements across platforms for cohesive storytelling. My experience with video, web, and interactive design allowed me to create consistent visuals that elevate the viewer experience. For example, I developed a brand audio logo using Adobe After Effects in Andrea Kratz's Multi-Platform Delivery class. Creating the logo with a transparent background was crucial, as it enables seamless embedding of the audio logo into other videos without a colored background, ensuring versatility across various projects.
Acquisition: This process required mastering advanced techniques in After Effects, such as layering, key-framing, and exporting with transparency settings. The result was a dynamic and professional motion graphic that effectively combined audio and visual elements for enhanced brand representation.
Relevance: This competency is essential for producing engaging, cross-platform content that resonates with diverse audiences by ensuring that the messaging, design, and delivery are tailored to different platforms while maintaining a cohesive brand identity. It allows adaptability in addressing audience preferences, leveraging trends, and utilizing platform-specific features to maximize impact. By combining creativity with strategic planning, this skill ensures content effectively captures attention and drives meaningful engagement across various digital and traditional channels.

Definition: Adaptability is adjusting to changing circumstances and project requirements. I enhanced this skill through diverse projects that required me to learn new tools and styles and adapt to feedback. A key example was during Bartley Argo’s Design Research class in Week 3’s “Stylization” design challenge, where I designed outdoor display banners for various holidays.
Acquisition: This project required significant flexibility as I navigated the technical challenges of creating visually engaging banners with precise typographic and graphic compositions. The process involved using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign to create layered designs that adhered to strict resolution, format, and layout requirements. Additionally, the challenge of ensuring each banner could be split for pole displays without disrupting the design elements required quick thinking and adaptability. By experimenting with image placement, typography, and blending techniques, I ensured each design was cohesive and impactful while meeting project specifications.
Relevance: This experience demonstrated my ability to pivot my approach to meet unexpected challenges, such as adjusting to feedback and refining designs to ensure clarity and professional quality. It reinforced the importance of being flexible and resourceful in dynamic design environments.
19. Leadership
Definition: Leadership is the ability to guide teams and projects toward successful outcomes. Through collaborative projects, I honed organizational, communication, and motivational skills. A prime example was during group sessions where I hosted and recorded our meetings, ensuring clear communication and structured discussions. I facilitated these sessions by setting agendas, addressing questions, and ensuring every member’s input was heard and valued.
Acquisition: In addition to hosting, I recorded and edited the meeting videos, summarizing key outcomes and uploading them to YouTube and the school’s portal for review. This demonstrated my ability to lead clearly, ensure efficient collaboration, and deliver results that aligned with project requirements.
Relevance: Leadership equips me to manage projects and mentor others, enhancing team productivity and project success. The experience greatly strengthened my leadership abilities, particularly in managing projects and mentoring others. By fostering a supportive and collaborative environment, with guidance my team headed toward achieving shared goals, enhancing both individual and collective productivity. Through clear communication, strategic decision-making, and a focus on empowerment,
I cultivated a sense of trust and accountability contributing to the team’s overall success.
20. Problem-Solving
Definition: Problem-solving involves identifying challenges and implementing effective solutions to achieve desired outcomes. This competency emphasizes the ability to navigate obstacles with creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. A notable example of my problem-solving ability arose during a group project where Jeffrey Wells highlighted the potential significance of the Enso concept in one of my designs. Although the concept was present, his observation inspired me to delve deeper into its meaning, conduct thorough research, and refine the design to give it a more deliberate and impactful focus. Additional support came from Bear Risch, who admired the stacked Buddha stones.
Acquisition: Beyond facilitating group discussions, I took the initiative to record and edit meeting videos, ensuring that key points and outcomes were summarized and accessible to the team through YouTube and the school’s portal. This approach enhanced collaboration and demonstrated my ability to manage technical tasks efficiently and ensure alignment with project goals. Integrating feedback into my work and refining designs based on insights like the Enso concept further showcased my ability to address challenges with clarity and precision. Additionally, the process was shared with the class and mainly for my classmate's projects in Las Vegas, by the appreciation of the architectural design style called Googie, seen in iconic Las Vegas signs. With its futuristic flair, bold shapes, and striking use of neon, Googie architecture inspired a dynamic approach to visual storytelling that paralleled the innovation needed to resolve design challenges. It was the least I could do with my 19 years working as a professional Architectural signage specialist to help my classmates with their thesis work.
Relevance: Problem-solving is critical in managing projects and mentoring teams, enabling enhanced productivity and successful outcomes. My ability to integrate architectural elements like Googie design principles into creative projects highlights the importance of drawing inspiration from diverse sources to address challenges. Googie’s bold, futuristic shapes and vibrant lighting are often seen in mid-century Las Vegas signage, a metaphor for dynamic, forward-thinking solutions.
21. Creative Storytelling and Branding
Definition: Creative Storytelling and Branding involve crafting compelling narratives that emotionally connect with audiences while establishing a brand’s identity. I developed this skill through multimedia projects that integrated visual, textual, and auditory elements to convey impactful stories.
Acquisition: For instance, in Puss Zen Bamboots, I drew inspiration from the classic fairy tale Puss in Boots and adapted it with an Asian, sustainable approach, emphasizing the philosophy of Zen as the foundation for design. By aligning the clever and resourceful traits of the fairy tale character with the brand’s mindfulness, simplicity, and sustainability values, I crafted a narrative that resonated deeply with eco-conscious audiences. The minimalist Zen-inspired designs reflected harmony and balance while telling a story of sustainability and thoughtful living.
Relevance: Using tools like Adobe Creative Suite, I integrated clean visuals, natural textures, and calming color palettes to reinforce the Zen theme, ensuring the brand story was engaging, simple, and impactful. This approach ensured the brand message was informed and emotionally connected with its audience, highlighting the harmony between design and purpose.
